I thought I was onto something new: the link between running and writing. Then a quick Google told me I had been beaten to this ‘new’ idea by nearly half the population. But it’s new to me and I had never given much thought to just how similar they are.
I was struggling to write this morning and gave up, deciding to go for a run instead. For some reason, I really struggled to run as well and stopped just over half way through the distance I ran on Thursday evening.
Just like writing, sometimes running comes easily, other times it’s damn hard. For very two different activities, they are amazingly similar.

While my legs are aching after a fairly short run, the words are flowing freely. Coincidence? I cannot rule it out, but I don’t think so. Running tests your body so there will be some discomfort, but I find it therapeutic. Almost meditative, clearing the mind of the clutter of my thoughts.
The other similarity is that they are both often about the journey as much as the goal. Spending nearly an hour to run 10k when you really don’t enjoy the run would be madness. Similarly sinking hours into writing an article, novel or other written work when you really don’t enjoy the journey.
Legally Blonde got it right – “I’m in the race but I already won and getting there can be half the fun”.
